Dealing Cards to Start Uno
The best way to determine who deals first is to shuffle the Uno cards and have each player draw a card. Whoever draws the highest number deals first.
Then going clockwise, the dealer distributes seven cards face down to each person. They then put the remaining stack of cards in the center and flip over the top one to begin the discard pile. Whoever’s turn is to the left of the dealer goes first!
At this point, you can choose to implement any house rules your playgroup agrees to. For example, jumping in by playing the same number or symbol when it’s not your turn or swapping hands when certain cards get played.
But otherwise, the gameplay stays the same!
How to Play Uno Game Cards
On each turn, you’ll have one main choice – play a card or draw a card from the top of the pile.
Your goal is to empty your hand, so you always want to play if possible. The card you play has to match either the color, number, or action/symbol on the top discard.
For example, you can play any Yellow card on a Yellow 5. Or you can play any 5 regardless of color. Action cards also count as a match to each other.
Drawing Cards in Uno
If none of your cards match, you have to say “Draw” and take the top card of the discard pile. You can play this drawn card immediately if it works. Otherwise, your turn’s over and play passes to the next person.
You’ll keep drawing cards until you get one that matches the top of the pile!
Using Action Cards for Fun in Uno
Action cards are where things get spicy! Each color has its own special card that mixes up the order when played:
- Skip – The next player loses their turn
- Reverse – Flips the direction of play
- Draw Two – Forces opponent to draw 2 and lose turn
For example, let’s say you play a Draw Two card. The person next in line would have to draw two new cards from the central pile and forfeit their turn.
Wild and Wild Draw Four Uno Cards
Wild cards give you the power to change the active color for the next play to anything you want. They’re incredibly useful since they act as an automatic match.
The Draw Four variety not only lets you choose the color, but the next player has to draw four new cards too! However, you can only use this card if you don’t have an actual match in your hand.

- If you have one card left, make sure to call “Uno!” right away

Paying attention to what’s been put down so far is crucial to success. That way, as soon as you see a color or number hit the discard, you’ll know to save matching cards for offense or defense.
I like to organize my hand of cards as matches come up. That makes decision-making faster during my turn.
Use Action Cards Strategically
Action cards possess a lot of power to change the outcome. When used properly, Skips, Draw Twos, and Reverses can completely flip the direction of the game.
I try to hold onto them until a pivotal moment instead of wasting them early. Even using Skip to block a player about to call Uno can preserve your chance at winning the round!
Team Up on Leader
In games with four or more people, you can implement some partnership strategy. This is especially key if someone’s close to emptying their hand.
Ganging up with another player can overwhelm an opponent with Draw Two and Reverse cards. Just make sure to turn on them before they outpace you too!
