I love using planners to stay organized. As a busy entrepreneur and content creator, having a system to plan out my days, weeks, and months keeps me focused and productive. But I’m also pretty picky about my planners. I want to be able to fully customize them to suit my needs.
That’s why I love the Happy Planner system. With its disc-bound format, you can easily add and remove pages. And you can print directly onto Happy Planner inserts so you don’t have to fuss with cutting down full sheets of paper.
Printing your own pages gives you total creative freedom. You can make planners tailored to your lifestyle, interests, goals, and aesthetic.
If you want to DIY beautiful and functional planners that are perfectly you, as a professional custom planner printing manufacturer, here’s my step-by-step guide on how to print your own Happy Planner pages.
How to Print Your Own Happy Planner Pages?
Choose Your Planner Size
The first thing to decide is which Happy Planner size you want to use:
Classic
The pages measure 7′′ x 9.25′′. This mid-size planner is the most popular and versatile option. It fits nicely in most bags and backpacks so you can take it on the go.
Big
With 8.5′′ x 11′′ letter-sized pages, this is better for leaving open on a desk. The larger format gives you more room for writing and decorating.
Mini
At 5′′ x 7′′, these petite pages are super portable. Mini planners are great as wallet inserts or for throwing in a purse. Just know you’ll have less space to work with.
Once you know your planner size, you can properly set up your print layouts.
Set Your Printer Settings
To print directly on Happy Planner inserts, you need to adjust your printer settings. Here’s how for both Windows and Mac:
Windows
- Go to Devices and Printers in your computer’s Control Panel.
- Right click your printer icon and select Printing Preferences.
- Click the button to Create New Form.
- Name your new form (Ex. “Happy Planner Classic”).
- Set the paper size to match your planner pages:
- Classic: 7′′ width x 9.25′′ height

- Save your custom paper size.
Design Your Planner Pages
Now comes the fun part—creating your own planner pages! Here are some tips:
Use Planner Design Software
While you can use any program to design pages, software specifically for planners streamlines the process. It takes the guesswork out of getting margins and dimensions right. Some top options include:
- Canva
- Adobe InDesign
- PicMonkey
- Microsoft Publisher
Choose Fun Graphics
Let your personality shine through with fun fonts, colors schemes, illustrations or photos. Print stickers, washi tape, and scrapbooking paper are also great for sprucing things up.
Print in Sections
If your design has dense graphics or elements that wrap around edges, print those sections separately. Then print lined areas for writing. This prevents things from getting misaligned or cropped incorrectly.
Allow Bleed Space
Add a 0.125′′ bleed area around anything that goes to paper edges. You’ll trim this off but it gives you a buffer just in case.
Print Your Planner Pages
You designed some gorgeous pages and now you’re ready to print! Follow these steps:
Select Your Custom Paper Size
Open the print dialogue box in whatever program you designed in. Under paper size, choose the custom form you created earlier for your planner.
For example, if you have a Classic Happy Planner and use Windows, choose the “Happy Planner Classic” listing.
Check Alignment
Load a test page of plain paper. Make sure graphics and lines align properly with your Happy Planner holes before you print on the final inserts.
You can hold the printout behind the inserts to preview placement. Adjust any settings like margin or scale percentage if needed.
Print Away!
When everything looks aligned correctly, load your Happy Planner inserts, cardstock, vinyl, or other printable paper. Have fun watching your custom creation come to life!
Additional Tips
Here are a few handy extra pointers for DIY Happy Planning:
- Use tabbed divider paper to separate sections
- Print on one side if you’ll use art pens, markers, or wet media so ink doesn’t bleed through
- Store extra printed pages in sheet protectors or page bags behind your planner
- Switch out designs whenever you want since it’s so easy to pop pages in and out
- Use stickers or washi tape to dress up any pages with empty spaces
